Ruwan Jayasinghe has been crowned champion of the first ever Oman Amateur Series after rounds of 74, 79 and 72 for a tournament total of 225.
Played over three consecutive days at Ghala Golf Club the event had the added attraction of World Amateur Golf Ranking points resulting in a strong field of players.
In the mix from the first round where he posted a two over par 74 to be tied with eventual runner up Badar Al Amri, Jayasinghe relinquished his lead after a second round score of 77 to Azzan Al Rumhy. However, Jayasinghe recorded the tournaments lowest round of the week in the final round to take top spot with a level par 72 around Ghala Golf Club which included three birdies and three bogeys.
The Sri Lankan, who plays out of Ghala Golf Club, claimed the title by a small margin of two shots from Omani National Team player Badar Al Amri who posted a final round 73, withAmhed Al Wahaibia further two shots back.
The Oman Amateur Series has been created by the Oman Golf Association to provide playing opportunities for elite amateur golfers based in the Sultanate. The events will be accredited with World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points, the WAGR listing is managed by the R&A and the USGA and is used as a global measure of the elite amateur competitive game. Currently Oman has one player, Azzan Al Rumhy, listed with WAGR status, through these events the Oman Golf Association endeavours to see this number increase.
