LIGONIER, Pa. — The Westminster College men’s golf team defeated non-conference rival Penn State Altoona 5-2 to claim its third-straight win in the annual match play battle for the Lee Hite Cup Tuesday afternoon.
The match play event with Penn State Altoona, played at the Laurel Valley Golf Club, honors Mr. Hite’s beneficence to both Westminster and Penn State Altoona.
Westminster won the inaugural event 4.5-2.5 in 2021 and earned a 4-3 victory in 2022.
Five of Westminster’s seven participating players earned wins.
Senior Joseph Trudeau scored a 4&3 win against Peter Nusbaum at No. 1. Junior Gavin Batdorff defeated Jack DiTrani 2 up at No. 3 and freshman Tyler Hager won 2&1 against Andrew Bruce at No. 4. Junior Logan Marnik won 3&2 at No. 5 against Michael Gloth and junior Peter Canovali won 3&2 at No. 6 against Sean McCullough.
Westminster will participate in Allegheny College’s Guy and Jeanne Kuhn Invitational Sunday and Monday. The event is being hosted by The Country Club of Meadville.
• Women’s Soccer — Westminster opened Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) play with a 1-0 shutout win at Saint Vincent College Tuesday afternoon.
Westminster improved to 7-0 overall and 1-0 in the PAC. Saint Vincent fell to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
The lone goal was scored three minutes into the match by freshman Chloe LaRosa off of a corner kick taken by junior Brooke Horvath.
LaRosa has scored 12 goals in seven matches this season, while Horvath has six assists.
Sophomore Morgan Murphy had six saves in the shutout. She has three shutouts and a .923 save percentage this season.
Westminster finished with a 6-5 edge on corner kicks while Saint Vincent had more shots, 8-7, and shots on goal, 6-3.
• Women’s Tennis — The Titans scored an 8-1 PAC victory at Waynesburg University Tuesday.
Westminster upped its season record to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference. Waynesburg fell to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the PAC.
Junior Gia Francisco and freshmen Emma Overlingas and Morgan Allen all earned two wins in the match.
Francisco partnered with sophomore Christine Rossi in an 8-0 No. 1 doubles win. Overlingas and junior Taylor Dlugozima (Wilmington High) won 8-0 at No. 2 doubles while Allen and sophomore Grace Askey posted an 8-0 victory at No. 3 doubles.
At No. 1 singles Francisco cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win. Junior Ryleigh Valone won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and senior Caroline Fox improved to 6-1 in singles play with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3. Overlingas pushed her singles record to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in PAC matchups with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 while Allen won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.
GROVE CITY
• Women’s Volleyball — Freshman Alexis Standford matched a season high with 14 kills Tuesday night while senior Anna DeGraaf posted 13 kills to help the GCC secure a 25-19, 20-25, 25-15, 25-21 victory over visiting Westminster (7-4) at the Grove City College Arena.
Senior Eloise Sutter added seven kills while senior Grace Kim and junior Audrey Donnelly each chipped in six kills. Junior setter Kennedy Kerr tallied a season-high 27 assists and sophomore Brooklyn Wirebaugh added 22 assists for the Wolverines (12-3).
Donnelly led the Grove City defense with five blocks while Standford recorded three blocks. Senior libero Gabby Lucas recorded a team-leading 25 digs. Freshman Julia Fisher added 21 digs while Wirebaugh had 13 digs.
Senior Lauren Lampus and sophomore Rachel Brady finished with 11 kills apiece for Westminster. Lampus chipped in with 15 digs while Brady added 13 digs and two blocks. Sophomore Angie Nardone finished with 19 assists and four digs while senior Reanna Daniels (Hickory High) had 11 assists and seven digs.
• Men’s Golf — The Wolverines earned second place out of seven teams Tuesday at the Bethany College Invitational, held at Oglebay’s Jones Course. Grove City finished with a 329 team score. Pitt-Greensburg won the event with a 323.
Junior Adam Steinmetz earned second place overall by shooting a 75. For Steinmetz, this week’s PAC Golfer of the Week, it his second straight runner-up finish. He placed second out of 100 men last Thursday at the Grove City Invitational.
Freshman Tyler Derstein earned ninth overall with an 82. Sophomore Cayden Testa and freshman Nathan Young tied for 13th. Testa and Young both carded 86s.
Sophomore Brian McDonnell rounded out the lineup with a 91, good for 19th. Senior Clark Fraser competed as an individual and finished 20th. Fraser posted a 92.
Waynesburg University’s Matthew Karpeal won the event with a 74. Thirty-two men competed in Tuesday’s event.
Grove City will compete in the Allegheny Invitational next Sunday and Monday in Meadville.
THIEL
• Women’s Volleyball -— Thiel lost a non-conference game on the road to the Penn-State Behrend Lions, 3-1, Tuesday night in Erie.
Penn-State Behrend won 3-1 by set scores of 25-13, 22-25, 25-20, 25-22.
Erica Gregory led the Tomcats with 16 kills. Arin Delattre recorded 10 kills, while Kylle Jordan tallied nine kills. Delattre also recorded two service aces, while Carlie Reynolds (Grove City High) led the team with three service aces. Taegan Geiser led the Tomcats with 35 assists.
Defensively, Reynolds led the team with 12 digs. Geiser recorded 10 digs, while Daisy Jenness recorded 11 digs.
Hannah Phillips led Penn-State Behrend with 20 kills, while Breana Reynolds recorded 15 kills.
Meg Goodsel recorded a game-high 49 assists, while Sara Nobach led with 22 digs.
The Tomcats are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Geneva. The non-conference game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
