1. Adding to a week that already had an announcement of a controversial golf-ball rollback (you can read that special edition of Tour Confidential here), World No. 3 Jon Rahm joined LIV Golf for a deal that’s reported to be well into nine figures. Not long ago Rahm said he had no interest in the up-start league and that crazy money wouldn’t change his lifestyle anyway. So, what happened? Josh Sens, senior writer (@joshsens): The big thing that changed is the golf landscape, in which the Tour did a sneaky about-face on doing business with the Saudis (giving players free…
Korea University Institute for Continuing Education is recruiting new participants into its golf management program, which has been scheduled to run from March 6 through July 3 next year. First launched in September this year, the program allows participants to learn how to play golf from prominent figures in the sport. Course leader Kim Joo-young will oversee the entire course, with former pros Kim Joo-hyung, Kim Ju-yun, Chung Jae-eun, SBS Golf lecturer Lim Jin-han and former PGA Tour caddie Lim Tae-kyung offering golf lessons. Kim Joo-hyung competed on the JPGA in the 1990s and now teaches golf at his own…
Reports are circulating that golf star Jon Rahm is considering a jaw-dropping $600 million offer to join LIV Golf. The buzz began when Rahm withdrew from TGL, a virtual golf league founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, leading to heightened speculation about his potential move to LIV Golf, a Saudi-backed league. Rahm asking for LIV Golf format changes? Several outlets have revealed that Rahm is in advanced discussions with LIV Golf, contemplating the lucrative offer. If he decides to make the leap, Rahm is likely to join the team captained by fellow Spaniard Sergio Garcia. However, the deal comes with a condition – Rahm insists on changes to LIV Golf’s format. The league’s current structure, comprising 12 four-player teams and…
Chinese golfer Sui Xiang set the pace early in the Singapore Ladies Masters on Thursday by carding a flawless six-under-par 66 to grab the first round lead. Shannon Tan from Singapore also stayed in the hunt for a breakthrough in the China Ladies Professional Golf Association (CLPGA) by returning with a 68 to share second place with China’s Cai Danlin, Thailand’s Sherman Santiwiwatthanaphong, Kultida Pramphun and Japan’s Ayaka Suzuki at the Laguna National Golf Resort Club. Despite enjoying a bogey-free round that was highlighted by six birdies on holes five, six, 11, 12, 15 and 18, Sui believes there is…
The golf course is perhaps not the arena that immediately comes to mind when you’re thinking about geopolitics. But with one proposed golf business deal, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, known as MBS, just hit the geopolitical equivalent of a hole-in-one. The surprise announcement this week that Saudi-backed LIV Golf would merge with the preeminent American PGA Tour under a new parent company means MBS has gained a powerful hand over American and international golf. LIV Golf is a newish enterprise launched by the Saudi sovereign wealth fund, which is essentially the half-trillion-dollar piggy bank of the crown prince.…
Every year, the San Juan Golf & Tennis Foundation, in partnership with the San Juan Golf & Tennis Club, hosts an annual fundraising golf tournament with the primary purpose of raising money to support scholarships for deserving high school graduates on San Juan Island. This past Sunday, June 4, the event hosted 55 players and raised over $8000. This year’s tournament delivered an exciting spin to the traditional four-person scramble format, with opportunities to “buy” extra-long drives, mulligans and made putts, led to exceptionally low scores and even more laughs. The winning team walked away with a birdie-heavy score of 26…
London, New York, Mexico City (11/3 – 18) PGA is looking gloomy – are the fat years over? The emergence in 2019 of LIV Golf has spectacularly upset the status quo, posing a threat as a rival to the PGA Tour monopoly, as the leading professional golf tour in the world. Newcomer LIV Golf brazenly hijacked a number of some of the most famous professional golfers from the PGA Tour, luring them away with more lucrative deals. Several major champions and former world numbers, including names like Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, and Patrick Reed are now…
PGA star Matt Wallace has taken aim at Talor Gooch’s decision to join LIV Golf, insisting that the latter’s £19million winnings from the competition do not justify his move. American Gooch joined the breakaway LIV tour a year ago, though it took him until last month to win his first event. That came in Adelaide, before he then finished top of the standings in Singapore one week later.Gooch was handed a £7.5m total prize pot for those two victories, with £6.5m coming from his individual performance and £1m for his Range Goats team. That took his total winnings from LIV to £19m since he…
