The University of Wisconsin women’s golf program hosted the Badger Invitational, spanning from Sunday to Tuesday, at University Ridge Golf Course. Amongst a strong field of competitors, UW finished in second place out of 15 teams. Leading the way was true freshman Kate Brody, who has emerged as one of the top performers early on. Brody shot a total of 215 over the three days, finishing one shot below par to place sixth. After the first day of action, Brody emerged in second place behind the eventual winner — Camryn Carreon of the University of Texas at San Antonio. This came with varying weather and…
A once-beloved municipal golf course in Stockton, California, finally has a direct path to becoming a working greenspace thanks to a plan approved recently by the city’s common council. Van Buskirk Golf Course in south Stockton has been closed since before the pandemic, and a plan to bring the space back to a park was given full approval, even though it will take some time to implement. The course was shuttered when the city’s lease with a former operator expired in 2019, is located between Houston Avenue and the levees of the San Joaquin River and French Camp Slough. The golf…
The Europeans are looking for their first-ever Solheim Cup three-peat. In doing so, they’ll head to Finca Cortesin in Casares, Andalusia, Spain on Sept. 18 for the 18th playing of the biennial matches. Nasa Hataoka has caught the attention of the audience at the 2023 US Women’s Open being held at Pebble Beach Golf Links. Her Saturday round at the event was nothing short of remarkable. With weather conditions being less than ideal, Hataoka persevered through the true test at the iconic golf course. Bouncy greens and high winds do not make a good combination for golfers. Yet, that is what the field was faced with going into the third round of the US Open. The numbers put in by golfers were off the charts- from quintuple bogeys to 15-over par, the course…
Lydia Ko climbed handily up the field in the second round of the US Women’s Open, despite finishing it 10 shots off the leader. The New Zealand superstar shot a one-under 71 on the second day at Pebble Beach to make the cut after shooting a four-over 76 on day one. That left her in a tie for 27th, with Bailey Tardy of the US holding a two-shot lead at seven under. Ko, who has never won the US Women’s Open, got off to a rocky start when she suffered two early setbacks after beginning the day on the back…
With summer vacation in full swing and kids in search of outdoor activities, some local golf courses are doing their part in getting more young people on the links through a country-wide initiative. More than a dozen courses in the Waterloo region area are participating in the initiative which offers free rounds of golf for youths. “I just like the relaxing pace. I probably started actually golfing like a year and a half ago,” Ethan Sawyer, 12, said. The National Golf Course Owners Association of Canada (NGCOA) is growing the game through its ‘Take a Kid to the Course’ program.…
Casey had played 10 holes of the third round on Sunday before calling it quits with his tournament score at 4-under. The Englishman was 4-over par for the holes that he had managed in Hemel Hempstead. He was playing in the same group as Richard Bland – who was docked a stroke at the last LIV Golf in Spain for playing too slowly – and South Africa’s Branden Grace. Casey’s long-time caddie Johnny ‘Long Socks’ McLaren was back on the bag this week. McLaren stated last February he had all-but retired after revealing travelling had finally taken its toll on…
British Open champion Cameron Smith sent a warning shot to his rivals after winning the LIV Golf London event at Centurion Golf Club on Sunday. Smith shot a three-under 68 to finish on 15 under, one shot ahead of American Patrick Reed and fellow Australian Marc Leishman. The event was the last one for Smith before the 29-year-old defends his Open Championship later this month. Rory McIlroy made a pact with Justin Rose to not discuss this week’s shock news until after their first round of the Canadian Open on Thursday but the plan quickly fell apart. McIlroy and Rose were among the early starters at Oakdale Country Club where play began two days after the announcement of a partnership between the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which controls LIV Golf, shook the golf world. “Rosie and I said, ‘all right, no chatting until lunch’ so that we can actually concentrate on what we’re doing out there,” said two-time defending champion McIlroy.…
The life of a professional golfer can be a lonely one. A player might have a small team around them each week if they’re lucky – an agent, a physio, a caddie, a coach – but most spend a lot of their time flying solo, going from airport to airport, hotel to hotel, course to course alone, doggedly chasing their dreams week in and week out on tour, isolated in the pursuit of success. So when a player finds someone to share the long days with, the early mornings and the late nights with, the 68s and the 75s with,…
